The Ministry of Revenue and the Customs Commission jointly conducted a comprehensive training program for students from six universities in Addis Ababa, including St. Mary’s University. The 16-week program benefited 512 students, dedicating eight weeks to tax training and eight weeks to customs procedures. The curriculum spanned vital topics, ranging from tax awareness and administration to customs procedures and post-customs auditing.
To celebrate this milestone, the Ministry of Revenue and the Customs Commission organized a graduation ceremony today, June 25, 2026, at the De Leopol Hotel. The event was attended by the Minister of Revenue, Aynalem Nigussie, and the Deputy Commissioner of the Customs Commission, Azezew Chane. Opening the program, Commissioner Azezew remarked that the training would significantly boost awareness of tax administration and customs procedures. He congratulated the students on their achievements, noted their future roles as vital taxpayers and collectors, and commended university leaders for their dedication.
In her closing remarks, Minister Aynalem emphasized that the training program is expanding and will eventually reach more universities across the nation. She pointed out that Ethiopia’s annual tax revenue remains low relative to its population, underscoring the urgent need for collaborative efforts with universities to improve tax awareness, collection, and administration.
The ceremony concluded with an awards presentation for top-performing students across two categories. Students ranked fourth to sixth received a mobile phone and a certificate, while those ranked first to third were awarded a laptop and a certificate.
St. Mary’s University was also honored with a laptop and a certificate for its exceptional facilitation and support of the program. The university was represented by Dr. Manaye Adela, Academic Vice President, and Demis Hailegebreal, Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance. The Faculty expressed immense pride in facilitating the training, celebrating a flawless 100% pass rate among all students who took the final exam.
